How to Fall!

How to Fall!

Workshop led by Joanna Nobbe DPT

Everybody falls! Whenever you are truly pushing your physical boundaries, it is common to lose your balance and -- yes -- sometimes even to fall. While falling can be scary and at times disastrous, learning to fall safely can build confidence. In turn, more confidence can result in stronger movement, better balance, and a higher level of mobility throughout your lifespan. Maintaining a repertoire of ground-based movement can ensure that in the event of a fall, you are able to recover and get yourself up and off the ground.

This workshop is for adults of all ages and ability levels. Whether you want to go snowboarding this winter or keep your balance walking down the street, you will learn how to fall safely in all directions -- and, in the event of a fall, how to get back up.

Infinite Play Facilitation Seminar
Dec

Infinite Play Facilitation Seminar

This five-hour Infinite Play Facilitation Seminar will be an exploration of the approach to creating a play container utilized in Infinite Play classes, workshops, and retreats. There is no methodology or strict structure, but rather ideas and values around the process. In this way it is more artistic than mechanical. The seminar will cover the foundations of this process. The foundational topics to be covered will be sensitivity, facilitating rather than teaching, playing for the other, and finite play vs infinite play. These topics will be explored through both lecture, discussion, and movement.

Attendees should expect to walk away with a basic understanding of facilitating play and a greater awareness of the value of playfulness beyond movement. This is not a certification, but rather an educational seminar for teachers of any kind or interested humans. The intention is to provide tools to bring play back into the world.

This event is offered with tiered pricing ranging from $150-$350. If you wish to attend, but require financial assistance, please contact me.

Have you ever been curious about those wacky mud runs and obstacle challenges? Experience a 5K with 20-25 obstacles, all without getting muddy! We'll gather a group of spectators to cheer on the folks from UM who are running in this event.

About 35 members of Uptown have been training all year for obstacle course runs, with UM member Mark leading us through early morning runs and climbing/swinging/carrying/balancing practice every weekend. We ran a Tough Mudder in May and September.

In September, our own Coach Hassiem ran the course of the Hoboken City Challenge in a blazing-fast 30 minutes (and 1 second), arriving at 3rd place in the Elite division, with the fastest time of anyone younger than 30!

Next up, come watch your friends and neighbors run 5K while vaulting over taxicabs. Seriously. Join us to watch Hassiem, Mark, and others compete in the upcoming City Challenge on Randall's Island.

Moving Freely and Living Fully: How to break the cycles of stress and pain while taking strides towards your best life with Patrick Hogan

We all go through periods of stress, pain, or feeling stuck in aspects of our lives. You might be experiencing pain in your body or a consistent internal nagging sense that something needs to change. How do you navigate through these moments to take positive steps forward?

Our culture has trained us to work and live in ways that go against the nature of both our physical bodies as well as our essential selves. So, each part of our lives can seem at odds with each other and it can be hard to know what path to take or where to focus. No wonder we’re so stressed out!

What if it could be different?

What if you could design and organize your life to support your values, goals, and desires?

What if you could learn to move more freely in your body while engaging in life more fully?

Join me in a free workshop where we’ll look at how you may be struggling against your true nature, as well as how to align your body, mind, and lifestyle to support the flourishing of the life that you innately know is right for you.

We’ll talk about why you might not be meeting your goals, what’s leading to higher stress, and how to get unstuck to both reduce pain and take strides toward your ideal life.

Training With Pain: How to Adjust Your Workouts To Meet Your Goals

No pain no gain? Rest it until it's better? The art of exercising with pain is somewhere in the middle.

Pain can be a great teacher, although it's not always pleasant or fun. Working with pain or recovering from an injury can teach you so much about your body, movement, your motivations, your goals, your beliefs...indeed, yourself.

In this two-hour workshop, you’ll learn a practical approach to keep exercising, moving, and playing within your comfort zone. You'll learn some criteria for when to modify or stop an activity, and when it's OK to move with some discomfort or pain. Also, what IS pain anyway? (Hint: it's more complicated than you might think!)

The goal of this workshop is to promote confidence, self-efficacy, creativity, and longevity in your movement practice rather than fear and avoidance. And, of course, when it's appropriate to consult with an expert, because sometimes we all need a little help.

You’ll come away with a new understanding of pain, of your own coping strategies — and new tools to work with your body in an empowering way. All levels welcome!

Capoeira Workshop with Mestre Alegria

Capoeira Workshop with Mestre Alegria

$45

Capoeira (pronounced ka-poo-eyh-da) is an African-Brazilian martial art that incorporates acrobatics, dance, music, and songs in a rhythmic dialogue of body, mind, and spirit. It is a communal game in which two opponents play each other inside the roda (a circle), formed by the other players who create rhythm for the game by clapping, singing, and playing the berimbaus (African-Brazilian traditional instruments, considered the soul of Capoeira) and other key instruments. The two opponents compete with each other using capoeira movements, camouflaging the self-defense kicks and moves with playful acrobatics and dance-like moves spontaneously creating strategy to fool their partner and catch them off guard. Originally created by enslaved Africans brought to Brazil, Capoeria began as a means of practicing techniques self-defense and to fight for their freedom. During its early years, Capoeira was disguised as a dance in order to be practiced openly. Today, it is widely known and practiced in different forms around the world. Come to the workshop for an introduction to this beautiful and unique art form.

About the instructor:
Leandro da Silva (Mestre Alegria) was born in Bahia, Brazil. He began his Capoeira training at the age of nine years old with Mestre Jelon Vieira and has demonstrated and taught capoeira throughout Brazil, the United States, and Europe. An accomplished, professionally trained dancer of various styles (Capoeira, Afro-Brazilian, modern, ballet, contemporary), Mr. Silva has toured the world for several years as a member of the highly acclaimed DanceBrazil dance company.
