Not Intimidating, But Challenging—The Uptown Movement Way

Ironically, as a gym owner, I’ve been feeling the urge to join another gym lately. When your passion becomes your work, sometimes you just want a place where you can train without thinking about logistics, programming, or operations.

But as I started shopping around, I realized something—I kind of hate gyms.

You walk in, and you’re immediately hit with blaring music and fluorescent lighting guiding you through a maze of machines. The place is packed, yet somehow, no one seems to acknowledge each other. You can almost hear David Attenborough narrating the experience:

“As the newcomer sheepishly surveys their unfamiliar surroundings, they are taken aback by the alpha male howling through his latest lift. This display of dominance marks the boundaries of his territory—an unspoken warning to all outsiders. Meanwhile, the female counterpart claims her space at the squat rack, executing exaggerated hip movements, a clear demonstration of her mastery over the domain. Aaaah, and there it is—the hurried migration to the cardio machines, the safest refuge for the newcomer in this most unforgiving of gym tundras.”

Now, to be fair, I don’t actually hate gyms. I love them, in part because I find amusement in these little anthropological observations, but mostly because I know what I’m doing. I understand the alpha types and their rituals. I know that no one is actually watching me, because they’re all focused on their own training. But that confidence? It comes from decades of experience. I started young.

The real reason “I hate” gyms is because I have so much empathy for those who need them but haven’t had that early exposure. The commercial gym experience isn’t designed to be welcoming—it’s chaotic, impersonal, and often overwhelming. It doesn’t feel like a place for learning, and for many, it doesn’t feel like a place they belong.

Gyms Should Challenge You, Not Intimidate You

A gym should be a place that honors hard work. It should challenge you physically and mentally, even push you outside your comfort zone. But it should never make you feel inadequate.

That’s where so many big-box gyms fail the people who need them the most. Instead of building confidence, they highlight weaknesses. Instead of guiding people, they throw them into the deep end.

Challenge Over Intimidation

There’s a difference between being pushed to grow and being made to feel like an outsider. Some gyms thrive on intimidation, like you have to “earn” your place before you belong. We reject that mentality.
